ethan bortnick: THE ENGRAVINGS TOUR
MAY 2023
22 YEAR OLD, ETHAN BORTNICK SOLD OUT LOCAL LONDON ‘OMEARA’ VENUE.
THROUGHOUT, THE YEARS ETHAN BORTNICK BECAME A PHENOMENON ON SOCIAL MEDIA APPS SUCH AS YOUTUBE AND MORE RECENTLY TIKTOK. COMPLIMENTED AS THE COMBINATION OF mozart AND BILLIE EILISH, THE EXPECTATION LIVES UP. HAVING THE OPPORTUNITY TO BE THE PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE NIGHT, i got to witness the brilliance of his haunting yet experimental style of pop mixed with his piano skills.
although, i was present during soundcheck i got faced with the news that bortnick lost his voice that morning. THE EMOTIONS WERE STRONG, BEING IN THE ROOM YOU COULD FEEL THE Perseverance and determination from him wanting to continue on with the show. and with that he did.
being in the crowd, i heard conversations of those who were figuring out who ethan bortnick was and those that knew who ethan bortnick is. the lights faded and the instrumentals began. there he was, the man of the night ethan bortnick. with his empowering stage presence , you would be shocked to know he was unwell. gasps were heard across the venue once bortnick let out an honest yet heartfelt announcement after his ecstatic entrance. the emotion doubled to what i felt during soundcheck, the cheering and support the audience gave towards ethan was a scene i kept thinking about. it brought bortnick to tears along as the crowd. to add even more surprise, bortnick concluded his speech with rewarding the crowd with free tickets to his next headlining london show. i let out a heart-wrenching smile, being in that room you could feel the sincerity from him and how much he wanted to put out a good show. to which he did. from his up-beat performance of ‘engravings’ to his intimate performance of ‘the last laugh’ he has the variety to become a pop sensation.
throughout, all performances the audience spread the emotion. they screamed, they sung, they danced. it was truly magical. particularly, during ‘the last laugh’ where flashlights were shown across the venue and during ‘happy f***ing birthday’ where a montage of childhood footage was displayed on the screen behind him. from his sincere self, the meaningful songs, the tribute visuals to his reciprocated audience it concluded in an unforgettable night. a night where he put a statement to the question of “who is ethan bortnick?”
